Farm to Table Science Weekly Class

$10.00

This special class brings learners together to design and build their garden, take care of the animals who help us to produce food, and create and cook special meals for their families to showcase all their hard work.    Square foot gardening curriculum is used and adapted with Tanzanian farming practices in mind.

Groups will decide upon what to plant in their garden and will learn good planting practices and how plants get along together in the garden.  They will learn good soil practices, composting, the benefits of critters such as bees, butterflies, worms and more.  Keeping a nature journal learners will see how nature works in harmony to create bounty for everyone.  Projects such as creating a vertical garden and comparing the yield of a traditional versus vertical garden along with necessary water and nutrient use will be engaged in.

Learners will also engage in a deeper scientific understanding of the garden including activities like DNA extraction of a vegetable or pollination of pumpkins.  Learners will take care of bees, ensure a safe home for the butterflies, and so much more.  Periodically, families will be invited to a special meal prepared by their learner from the garden and animals that they have been lovingly learning from and taking care of.

Each week learners will meet with their group to take care of their garden and learn science, ecology and environmentalism.  As well, during the week, learners are welcome to visit their garden and the animals to see the progress and feel a part of the growing experience!
